interesting. i meant 1024 frames, 2 periods and 256 frames, 2 periods.
sorry for the excessive terseness. What versions of alsa and jackd?

kernel 2.6.13, alsa-1.0.9, jack 0.100.0 
debian sarge (mostly) with a few things (alsa, jack, libsndfile, etc.)
backported from etch.
