I've discovered it is possible to manually set an effect's default settings 
into ecasoundrc, but I can't work out the syntax.

Actually I've tried to run the version of ardour that came with SuSE and 
couldn't get it to cooperate at all.  Just noticed that SuSE 9.2 comes with 
jack-rack, but am sticking to my decision to wait until 9.3/10 to upgrade 
(for the moment).
