This _is_ simple to do.  On the right side of the editor window, there's
a pane for "Regions/name".  Right-click in there and choose "Import audio".
That'll bring up a file requestor.  Find your WAV file and click "Import
selected", and the file will be listed there.  You then just drag the
name into an Ardour track, and you're there.
