I've figured out (see my other post) that, as you suggest, my player is, indeed, getting the info over the internet from some CDDB service. I actually was not interested in getting the CDTEXT from an existing commercial CD onto a ripped copy but rather getting it onto CD's burned from original material of my own or my clients.
