I am currently using HDSP + cardbus with ALSA, Jack, PD, Ardour, etc.... 
under Gentoo.

If you are buying a laptop, make sure you read RME's [slightly outdated] 
hardware tips, so you know a bit about what components to avoid... espc 
the PCMCIA controller chip!!!!
