The manual can be downloaded here: https://downloads.focusrite.com/focusrite/scarlett-4th-gen/scarlett-solo-4th-gen The "Inst" button switches between instrument and line level input. The "Air" button enables some classic pre-amp emulation. The device, as new, can be mounted like a USB storage device - this is how you access the bundled software. This mode can be disabled later.
I am using the 3rd gen a lot with Raspberry Pi 4B, and I am very satisfied with the device (especially with the delay performance, it was the best from all tested devices). However, I noticed that the driver in the 6.X kernel is much less reliable than the one in the 5.4 kernel (distorted sound, with some samples in every buffer set to zero or random values). Increasing the buffer size or number of fragments does not really help. Sometimes it works well, but until now I could not find any pattern in it. I never experienced this with the 5.4 kernel. My guess is that this problem is related to the delay optimizations of the USB driver in the 6.X kernel. Best, Giso
