I've happily been using a fiio device for many years. The one I have
comes with minimal storage out of the box, but has two SD slots, both
showing up as normal storage when plugging in through USB. Models
newer than mine moved from a custom OS to one based on android, and I
remember reading up on it to confirm that it is open enough to install
any apps you might need that could help you, such as voice
(incidentally I use an app named Voice for audiobooks), or even a
completely different audio player. Their devices might be a bit pricey
for something you might not be completely sure will do what you want
though.
