I did not even know you could stop pulseaudio!
After:

    $ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service
      # and `systemctl status --user pulseaudio.service` to
      # double check

`ecasound -i ~/some-file.ogg -o alsa` worked! It is a cumbersome but
it will do. Thanks
