Have you checked Thunderbird add-ons?
Tools->Add-Ons and Themes->Find more add-ons

Okay. It could be a one-way street. Still saving to personal address
book but from what I can read the four I get when I search can sync and
retrieve contacts, it seems.
This one seems to be hitting closest to target - the Cardbook addon
looks promising.
