Hi Fons, possibly the USB hardware in the two laptops is different. Since lsusb picks the device up the next step would maybe to check if udev is creating the right device nodes. Try running sudo udevadm monitor
and then plug in the device of course ;)
on both devices and see if there are significant differences..
