Well, it's quirky/buggy, but I often use it anyway:  Seq24 perhaps will do?

As an added bonus, it has Jack transport sync (which can be tempermental
to get working also).  I think it does its actual note send/record over
plain ALSA MIDI despite having the Jack tempo sync.
