It would help if you could name a few of these utilities. On Arch I see
quite a few ready-made packages delaing with MIDI on all levels and I
suppose that quite a few of them should be in some Ubuntu-compatible
repository. So actual names might help. There are always some old
packages around in any field. Compiling your own you might also miss
some dependency...
