Xubuntu 18.04 + RT kernel + KXStudio repositories. Or Debian Testing + RT kernal + KXStudio. Debian Testing's a bit more tricky sometimes, so Xubuntu is probably better shoice.

My laptop does audio, graphics, writing stories and poetry, general stuff like that.

So, what is the general recommendation for people who want to work with audio on a laptop that isn't necessarily dedicated to audio?

I never installed Mint, neither have I ever used a Mint live media.

Well, I did use a Mint LTS for a number of years, and actually agree
with much of what you said - I wouldn't use it again. A number of
issues that were fixed in upstream Ubuntu never made it downstream,
and it became quite frustrating. The much larger Ubuntu user base is
reflected in a better user experience in my opinion.

    Best wishes,

    Neil
