I don't know for this one but the zoom H4N1 work out of the box. You
must have in mind this is a USB2 compliant device (USB2 have a low
bandwitch), and when used as audio interface for your PC, it limit the
performances you can get (at 48 kHz 24 bits stereo).

Which imply I use it mostly as a stand alone device and copy the
recorded files into my PC for later work with ardour or jamin. As a
standalone device it is very handy. You can record with the built-in
stereo microphone or with external microphones, and plug-in 2 other
external sources at the same time, which give 4 audio channels in
synch at any rate that device can do.
