yoshimi does not function

Hello, All--

I have been unsuccessful getting Yoshimi to work in Ubuntu Studio 18.04.  This has been the case for the Yoshimi included in the distro, 1.5.7, and 1.5.8.  When starting, the GUI and splash screen appear.  The splash screen does not disappear, and the GUI is completely frozen.  the command, "killall yoshimi," fails to eliminate the GUI.

i'm sorry i can't be of more help, as no error messages have been generated.  If anybody else has had this experience, i'd be happy to hear any solutions you've learned.
