Honestly I feel that this is more so a task for tutorials and documentation than for the UI itself. I've thought about integrating some light support for in app tutorials, e.g. a click-by-click walkthrough for a supersaw, but I don't think there will be enough development time in the short term.
If I would be tasked with designing a better GUI, my first steps would be developing an idea of the architecture and expressing it in a diagram, to have an overview of all the building blocks and how they connect. This may also highlight somewhat artificial restrictions. The names themselves should be scrutinized. Then I would look in how far the diagram can inform on-screen layout. Even in the worst case, it would still be a great asset for documentation.
