Thanks for pointing this one out!
I had another USB soundcard connected to the machine, which apparently
caused that error. Without the usb card it did load.
 
> What is the output of    cat /proc/asound/cards  ?
Sadly I am unable to replicate the error but can say that it has to do
with device ordering.
