You could send bank select/program change using amidi -P... -S... .
Slight flaw: my amidi doesn't support -P, which I assume, is to send to an ALSA sequencer device.

Anyway, I must have been a moropn, since I get stereo now, but LinuxSampler is unkind to the volume ADSR of the sound, which is - I assume - not present and so I get a click at the end of every note. But perhaps that can be tweaked. :)
