The URL is in the config file. On GNU/Linux by default ~/.config/ardour4/config and/or /etc/ardour4/config Ardour transmits the current version, the OS and architecture via http (hence the IP address is available as side-effect). It's a service provided to to people who are interested in new version notifications. As the pingback page on ardour.org says: "Ardour.org has no idea who you are or what you are doing with Ardour (and we don't want to know either)." Heck, if you're worried about this, you can't even surf the web to begin with. A simple firefox http request sends a lot more private information about the user.
