I don't know if was the best choice, but it was cheap: I use M-Audio DIO
2448. It doesn't have any analog in, only analog out (for monitoring) and
S/PDIF in and out both optical and coax.

At the time (couple of years ago) I couldn't get ALSA to work, but it does 
what I need with OSS. The card has alwyas been on the ALSA hardwre chart 
so you may be more lucky.
