[GIT PULL] msm-core changes for v3.5, take 2

Some minor fixes to msm.  Dropped Sapphire support from Daniel Walker
until concerns are addressed.

The following changes since commit 0034102808e0dbbf3a2394b82b1bb40b5778de9e:
