IBM x205 and /dev/ttySx

hello all,
i'm using three IBM x205 running Debian 3.0r4 and Linux 2.4.26 and i'm having the following misbehavior:
trying to use a device connected on the ttySx i'm not able to communicate with it, it's a an italian UPS connected for control/management on /dev/ttyS0, none of the three servers are able to communicate with it, but i tried two commercial motherboards running the same OS on the same serial ports are just fine. The answer i've had from the UPS seller is that they always had this kind of problem with IBMs which isn't such a great answer i guess. Did someone ever had the same problem using serial ports and IBM servers?
What i think is that the voltage +/- 5V generates a misagreement between the hardware and the driver, but at the moment i'm only guessing i didn't get deep on the matter yet.

thanks in advance,
Gianluca Riccardi
