Hi Jack,

That's a really long e-mail to start with..

Some of your findings are correct:

1. Coretemp module does not control fan speed. It reports
only CPU temperature. Nothing inside /sys/class/thermal/
reports CPU temperature. temp2_max is not writeable.
What does your temp2_crit report ?

2. trip_point_0_temp is not writeable...But recently there are
  patches that make it writeable. If you are interested, please
give this patch here, a try:

3. Could you please post the output of all cooling_device?/type
interfaces here ?
