My original version of this patch that was used internally did this, but it was pointed out during review that this made the API slightly messier due to the fact you needed to free a specific member of the handle list instead of being able to just free the whole struct, as well as making comparison of two structs much more verbose.

Overall, this version is cleaner than the original version, but it does require changing types in places. I can go back to the old version and resubmit if desired though.
