Carl,

Either the compile is failing or dkms automatic update for sl-modem is
not implemented.
Let's check the possibilites.

First do:
$ sudo apt-get install sl-modem-dkms
which should fix automation issues.

On my System the driver code package is at:
/usr/src/sl-modem-2.9.11~20110321/drivers/
Therein the results of a compile are shown, though only slusb.ko is
compiled on my 64 bit system. Run the equivalent on your system, and
report the results.
