James, Within /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-modem.conf, with $ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-modem.conf you should remove the leading #, to blacklist drivers snd_atiixp_modem snd_via82xx_modem snd_intel8x0m. These modem drivers are useless on your System and will only consume RAM resources The only possible support for your: ===================== PCI slot 00:1b.0 has a High Definition Audio Card The drivers are in the kernel modules tree at: /lib/modules/3.11.0-18-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko /lib/modules/3.11.0-12-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko The modem codec file for the HDA card is: /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 -------------------------------------------------------- Codec: LSI ID 1040 Address: 1 MFG Function Id: 0x2 (unsol 1) Vendor Id: 0x11c11040 Subsystem Id: 0x10250100 Revision Id: 0x100200 Modem Function Group: 0x1 The audio card hosts a softmodem chip: 0x11c11040 ================ is with the package at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ltmodem/11c11040/ agrsm-11c11040_20110811_i386.deb and companion agrsm-tools. Unfortunately I'm not sure of the compiling status under current Ubuntu Saucy kernels, and cannot immediately check on my x86_64 laptop. Later I'll boot a an x86_32 PC system and check thereon However if you have a broadband or ethernet option, that is preferable and these old modem drivers are becoming increasing unsupportable. With respect to using older hardware, my own experience is that 4-5 yr old systems are performing very slowly even under Linux.
