Hi,
I am trying to connect my dial-up internet service on my HP laptop. It
works in WinXP, but now that the laptop screen has stopped working, XP is
useless, as you can't see what is happening on an external monitor. Ubuntu
is not so constrained. No internal monitor, no problem, Ubuntu just uses
the external monitor and life goes on as it should.
However, the modem, which may be built in to the motherboard for all I
know (absolutely no desire to open up the laptop case and look) and
nothing in the modemData.txt looks like any chipset data I can recognise.
Will see if I get anywhere with wvdial.
I hope you wonderful folk may be able to decode what modemData says and
suggest what driver files I need to download (and maybe ever where?) to
get this OS to see its dial-up modem in all its glory.

provides Low Level support enabling contact with the modem hardware.
For all BUT Conexant chip soft modems (using hsfmodem software)
complementary High Level support is through a Smartlink utility: slmodemd

the package SLMODEMD_gcc4.4_alsa1.0.21.tar.gz having a compiled slmodemd. Unpack under Linux with:

and read instructions therein. But briefly, the modem is setup with command:
