near the bottom of http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads.php
is the support package needed for
"Conexant Systems (Rockwell), Inc. SoftK56 Data Fax Voice CARP"
USBmodemID=0572:1300

Under Ubuntu
$ tar zxf hsf*.tar.gz
and follow the instructions in the new folder.
While the USB modem can be tested with this package,
buying the software key is necessary to activate full speed service.

After the drivers are installed, the modem should be detected by:
$ sudo wvdialconf

I'll have to update scanModem to optimize output for your case.
