Tracy,

scanModem reports that you have an ESS modem:

For candidate card in slot 02:0c.0, firmware information and bootup
diagnostics are:
PCI slot	PCI ID SubsystemID	Name
 ----------	---------	---------	--------------
 02:0c.0	125d:2838	148d:1052	Communication controller: ESS Technology
ES2838/2839 SuperLink Modem

It also seems that you have a usb device loaded:

Potentially useful modem drivers now loaded are:
      cdc_acm

You may try to use
$ sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
and see if that detects the modem port, as the device may be a usb modem?:

ID 0572:1280 Conexant Systems (Rockwell), Inc.

 Support type needed or chipset:

 Completed candidate modem analyses.

The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev

Versions adequately match for the compiler installed: 4.5.2
and the compiler used in kernel assembly: 4.5.2

linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic resources needed for compiling are not
manifestly ready!

If compiling is necessary packages must be installed, providing:
	 linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic

You may also need linux-headers matching your kernel. Output of
scanModem for your ESS modem is not complete.

There are some packages for ess here:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ess/

however the latest drivers are over at

http://tx.technion.ac.il/~raindel/

Download the latest and give it a shot:

http://tx.technion.ac.il/~raindel/ess_2.6-v0.6.tar.gz

Regards,

Antonio
