Jonathan

You are almost done!!!!

It seems that you just don't know these two features:
-to terminate a successfull or failing (looping) session, use CTRL-C (hold the CTRL key and press C)
-to prevent wvdial from redialing, add this line in /etc/wvdial/conf:
Dial Attempts 1

That's a 1 = one (number of attempts)

Dear Jacques & Marvin,

Still no luck! In answer to your questions and instructions:-

1. there is only one telephone connector in the PC and it is on the
Agere Modem in the PCI slot 4. It is connected to the phone when windows
uses it successfully.

2. Under windows the agere modem works and has the following info:-
Agere Win Modem
PCI\VEN11C1&DEV_044C&SUBSYS_044C11C1&REV_02\3&267A616&0&70
Infpath = itdfnt.inf
Max port speed = 115200
DRiver files: ltmsg.exe, llmdmnt.sys, Modem.sys

3. The PC is an older one: ASUS K8V-8 motherboard with 1.5 Gig of RAM.

4. I checked the BIOS and the PNP is not enabled, info there said it
allows the BIOS to manage other equipment at that setting. there was no
setting for the " operating system" to be Windows or other.

I followed all of Jacques instructions and the damned thing connected
ONCE!

On reboot and repeat of all the sequence it failed again. Then after I
had temporarily change the BAUD to 57200 (per some agere/ubuntu help
file) It went mad and was constantly trying and failing - I had to
reboot to stop it!

I have appended the terminal output for the successful and then the
failed attempts below.

I hope you might still have some more ideas? I am at a loss now.

Thank you for all your help so far.

Regards, John
