Marvin: Yes, I did sudo modprobe agrserial. I started over, did a complete removal of agrsm06pci-2.1.80_20100106_i386.deb and associated files, reinstalled the latest version dated 20100106, and efax-gtk 3.2.3 works fine. Then I removed everything again and tried to duplicate the gripe in the OP, to see what steps I had messed up, and I couldn't do it. So I don't know what it was that caused the problem.
