Bad modem?

Well, I might be trying a bad modem. It was working for a few trial calls (I was given the voice number for the ISP, not the data), and then stopped working. Now all I get is:

[scott@scottslinux ~]$ wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: Device or resource busy
[scott@scottslinux ~]$

wvdial.log is empty, /var/log/messages has nothing about it. And yet when I try to run 'wvdialconf' again it is successful (see below), and does not modify my /etc/wvdial.conf.

Looks like bad hardware to me. What do you all think? I'll look for another modem to use, buy one if I must -- any recommends?
