No, you install/upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, then you just download the new
SLMODEMD-gcc4.4-alsa???? that corresponds to the alsa in Ubuntu 9.10.
You don't have to get the new one or install it before updating.

No, you will not have to make any changes.  It should just work as
usual.  I did not notice that you were still using previous Ubuntu
with kernel 2.6.28-???, that uses gcc 4.3.
