Almost there! I don't know if it's your change (probably!); as i also upgraded to the variant 2.6.31-20-generic. I could run wvdialconf without problem, then i tried multiple times to connect but right after connecting to the first site it was always crashing wvdial/pppd (i could see that it resolved the site in firefox and was trying to connect to it).
