Huh? Sounds like ... modem has been found. Using Acer Aspire 3680 laptop. When I run "sudo wvdial," and hold cordless phone to my ear, I can "hear" the modem dialing out. It SOUNDS like I'm close to connecting.

tra@geb:~$ sudo wvdial
[sudo] password for tra: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Sending: ATDT9728520780 --> Waiting for carrier. (keeps repeating) ATDT9728520780
tra@geb:~$ ls -l /etc/wvdial.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 297 2010-02-01 04:49 /etc/wvdial.conf
tra@geb:~$

P.S. " wvdial " seems to only work after I run this command:

sudo slmodemd -c GREECE --alsa hw:0,6

...not there yet, but seem close. closer than before.
