Βασίλης, RE: 1) i want to install stuff through the synaptic, but nothing i type (vlc, kwrite, inkscape, greek for openoffice) in the search is to be found. what am i doing wrong? what do i have to change in the synaptics? ----------- Now that you have run the update, Synaptic should be functional. Do: System > Admin > Synaptic> Settings and enlarge the Repository Lists that the Update Manager is accessing ~~~~~~~~~~~ indeed everything functions concerning synaptics now (even without changing anything) 3) after the update i have two "types" of 2.6.31 plus my 2.6.28-16 (that i installed in order for the slamr to function). Do i need all of them to appear at the grub menu? how do i change the order of the boot? -------------- First browse $ less /boot/grub/menu.lst then make a backup $ sudo less /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup At the end of the first stanza, changing the default to 2 should enable auto booting with 2.6.28-16-generic. Do the edit with: $ sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst Be EXTREMELY careful as bootup can be killed by injuring this menu. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ unfortunately: pedeli@pedeli-desktop:~$ less /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst: No such file or directory pedeli@pedeli-desktop:~$ and even when i give the $ sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst all that comes out is a blank page (check foto). i managed to change the boot priority through startupmanager though. still i don't know what the differences are and if i need them all to be there... for sure i need the 2.6.28-16 in order to get online and for sure i need one of the two 2.6.31 in order to be able to listen to music and watch videos WITH sound [[it would be so nice to be able to do both (internet AND sound) at the same time...]] - it has something to do with alsa conflicting with the slamr or something, isn't it? 2) i cannot see the internet activity (neither in the applet nor on the system monitor; it says "0bytes received, 0bytes sent" even though i know the connection is on heavy duty. ------------------ There used to be a "modem lights" gadget, but it seems to have been now dropped. You will have to research this yourself. The current activity monitor is now for ethernet/wireless ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a, ok. anyway this is of minor importance i am going to check now what you are asking me to do and answer with a different mail. if this is wrong, sorry for misunderstanding; i will send them both at the same time...
