VIA 1106:3068 with PCTEL PCT303A or LU97 Agere Scorpio work with slmodem 2.9.11

hi modem men,

if you have a VIA southbridge and either PCTEL or Agere Scorpio
modems, consider yourself lucky !

I have confirmed, what s.o. else already found with his laptop:

pci primary 1106:3068 AC'97 on VIA controller
subsystem 7321:1071 Mitac model # 7321 laptop

this subsystem is typically an PCTEL based Askey modem, but others
work too. Just make sure that all necessary line chokes are integrated
with the assembly to the phone line plug, when you exchange parts
between 2 laptops. Sometimes some chokes reside on the mainboard,
sometimes on a subassembly within the mini-pci-bay.

the number 7321:1071 about the subsystem is somewhat unspecific
for the purpose of modem hardware identification.

I took out the PCTEL chip based mini-pci modem from my Mitac 7321
and inserted a different mini-pci modem with Agere Scorpio chipset,
like this
http://xmodem.org/chipsets/agere/agere_LU97.html

funny enough, the subsystem readings remained the same.
Only in Windows, PCTEL's HSP56MR software (modem) was not happy anymore.

Coolly enough, slmodemd does not care much about trifle stuff like
that and presses on regardless. It gave me nice 54 kbps CONNECTs.

An example of a modem with PCTEL silicon is Askey V1456VQL-P1 (Int)
An example of a modem with Agere Scorpio AC97 silicon is Askey 1456VQL4A

So the folks at xmodem can mark agere LU97 scorpio as "supported by Linux"

greetings to all "quixotic souls" ;-)

However, Olive Essert from Belgium sends feedback to Modemsite
indicating that the Linux driver from Smartlink's website
(slmodem-2.9.9.tar.gz) works with the Lucent/Agere Scorpio modem that
came in a Toshiba notebook. This is possible because the hardware in
both Agere's AMR modem and Smartlink's - the silicon DAA - are the
same component. (As the softmodem name implies, all modem functions
except the physical interface to the computer and phone line are
performed outside the modem itself by software running on the PC).
And, Gennaro from Italy reports success using the Smartlink Linux
driver on Linux Slackware 10.0 (2.4.26) on an Acer Travelmate 740.
