hi modem men,

puppylinux 4.0 and earlier as well as slmodemd itself put to work smoothly
the following hardware:

pci primary 1106:3068 VIA Tech. AC'97 modem controller
(vendor / device)
MC`97 codec 1071:7321 Mitac laptop #7321 (subsystem number)

the second line denotes a laptop by Mitac (=1071) with the model # 7321,
which is printed on its bottom label too.

The actual hardware is by PCTel in the shape of a pair of PCT303A /
PCT303W chips, where PCT303A is the AC'97 interface and the other the
DAA/codec silicon.

They are packaged onto a mini-PCI modem card by Askey Inc., model
"V1456VQL-P1". They can be bought at ebay, but I guess the actual
phone socket on the laptop case may be individual in a laptop.

in latest sidux / debian install go 100% smoothly. in special modem
puppy v. 4.3.1 it would go smoothly, only that the hsf-modem driver
take over the VIA southbridge
keeping the slmodemd from working. You have to blacklist the all
hsfmodem kernel-modules, then all is fine.

To get good CONNECT 55666 and more with this softmodem, the set the country
properly such as with AT+GCI=42
- remember 42 is "THE ANSWER" by deep thought.

scanmodem has not yet stored the 1071:7321 combination, but a
different 1071-Mitac-modem, probably the same Askey hardware in fact.

scanmodem pointed out the hsfmodem southbridge conflict in a cogent manner.

type amixer info to obtain further info.

if you want to know about the windows .inf files, the manufacturers and driver
versions, look them up at

http://listing.driveragent.com/pci/1106/3068/*

some ms updates can be downloaded right away. also check xmodem.org for news.

on vintage PC's, slmodem makes itself felt by eating up around 10% of
CPU cycles. But then, some new adaptors would not work on that machine
at all for lack of cpu power.

I hope that more codec's can be found to work with slmodem !
