Aleck, >From http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/linux-image-2.6.24-24-generic you can start the download of a 2.6.24-24-generic kernel+modules package. Also get the corresponding hsfmodem package for 2.6.24-24-generic. After installing the new kernel and rebooting into it, install the hsfmodem package. That should suffice to get you online.
