Jonathan,
   Please check my guidance below concerning dkms.

Steve,

Linuxant is good about updating its packages, so likely there will be
a 28_16 soon.

But there is an alternative route. First install the dkms package
supporting auto updates:
$ sudo apt-get install dkms
and the linux-headers for 28_16 and libc6-dev packages needed for
compiling support
$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.28-16-generic

Reboot into 2.6.28-16-generic and rerun the hsfmodem install. Drivers
for the 2.6.28-16-generic kernel will be compiled and installed, also
the dkms will be informed of the presence of the hsfmodem package.
Thereafter, whenever you upgrade to a new kernel, the new hsfmodem
drivers will also be compiled and installed, provided you have
previously installed the linux-headers-MatchingNewKernel.
