Hello, I'm having some trouble with my PCtel HSP MicroModem 56 (134d:7890) and I'll really appreciate any help. I downloaded the file pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-10.tar.gz and run the setup script. I had to create the following soft link in the /usr/src directory for the driver to get compiled: ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-15/arch/x86 linux Then, the installation finished with the messages "installation done" and "modem activated", but when I tried "wvdial" (with the root user) I got: root@athlon-areco:~/Desktop/pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-10# wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ --> Sending: ATQ0 --> Re-Sending: ATZ --> Modem not responding. I read the FAQ file and it talks about issues with the sound module. I would like to remove temporally the sound modules and see if this is the problem. root@athlon-areco:/usr/src# lsmod | grep snd snd_hda_intel 435252 3 snd_pcm_oss 46336 0 snd_mixer_oss 22656 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 83076 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_dummy 10756 0 snd_seq_oss 37760 0 snd_seq_midi 14336 0 snd_rawmidi 29696 1 snd_seq_midi snd_seq_midi_event 15104 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi snd_seq 56880 6 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event snd_timer 29704 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd_seq_device 14988 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq snd 62756 15 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device soundcore 15200 1 snd snd_page_alloc 16904 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm I tried with the rmmod command, but it doesn't unload the soundcore module even with the -f option. I've added at the end of this email my ModemData.txt file, in case it is need. I'm stuck with this problem, and I don't know what else to do. So I would like to ask you if you could advise me about what steps to follow to try to make this modem work. Thanks, Antonio. The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev Versions adequately match for the compiler installed: 4.3.3 and the compiler used in kernel assembly: 4.3.3 Minimal compiling resources appear complete: make utility - /usr/bin/make Compiler version 4.3 linuc_headers base folder /lib/modules/2.6.28-16-generic/build However some compilations and executable functions may need additional files, in the FileNames.h (so called kernel "h"eaders) collection installed in /usr/include/ . For martian_modem, additional required packages are needed. The also required headers of package libc6 are commonly installed by default. Compiling hsfmodem drivers does require linux-libc-dev and libc6-dev packages, for kernels 2.6.24 and later versions. In not included on your install CD, search for them at http://packages.ubuntu.com or comparable Repository for other Linux distros. When compiling ALSA drivers, the utility "patch" will also be needed. Compressed files at: /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.28.tar.bz2 If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include. The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev If an alternate ethernet connection is available, $ apt-get update $ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel will install needed packages. For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to display the needed package list: Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition, they can be installed alltogether with: $ sudo dpkg -i *.deb Checking pppd properties: -rwsr-xr-- 1 root dip 277352 2009-02-20 15:25 /usr/sbin/pppd In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html To enable dialout without Root permission do: $ su - root (not for Ubuntu) sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd or under Ubuntu related Linuxes sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd Checking settings of: /etc/ppp/options asyncmap 0 noauth crtscts lock hide-password modem proxyarp lcp-echo-interval 30 lcp-echo-failure 4 noipx In case of a message like: Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied see http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/bigarch/archive-sixth/msg04656.html Read Modem/DOCs/YourSystem.txt concerning other COMM channels: eth0 Which can interfere with Browser naviagation.
