Did they provide you with a linux-image-2.6.28-10-686_version.deb package?
If so please send it to  "Jacques Goldberg" <Jacques.Goldberg@xxxxxxx>
so he can make it available off of his Linmodems site.
Just searching at http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages , they do not
have  2.6.28 installers, rather they have skipped from 2.6.27 to
2.6.29 versions

There are a number of people who have reported similar modem problems,
when slmodemd + snd-hda-intel support is needed.
