Try detaching as many external devices as possible before booting
Ubuntu , and shutting down as many programs as possible afterward.
Then:
$ cat /proc interrrupts | tee -a >> hermes.txt
$ sudo tail -f /var/log/messages | tee -a >>hermes.txt
Then attach the modem, and afterward send us the hermes.txt
