OK, 

I seem to have gotten a little farther on my own after some days and
with a new setup. I am now using Ubuntu 9.0.4 RC. 


I took down all interfaces, made sure /etc/resolv.conf existed and had a
nameserver in it that worked, that all phones, fax machines, answering
machines and DSL modems were disconnected. I am also using
SLMODEMD_gcc4.3_alsa1.0.18. It seems to be prompting me for a password
and regardless of entering it I end up disconnected/timing out. 

I am not using Carrier Check = no  or Stupid Mode = 1 as they seem to
have not made any difference. If anything they seem like it might be
problematic with them enabled.


Further suggestions would be appreciated.
