Subject: Modem installation Problem

Once again I am here because my problem is still there.
My details.
I recently install ubuntu 8.10 and also new to Linux.
System : Dual boot Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP
Modem: Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem
I already use this modem in windows XP Only for net usage.
Now I want dialup connection not only in XP also in My ubuntu.

I download scanModem.gz and scan my modem

As seen in modemdata.txt I download slamr-2.6.27-7-generic.tar.gz
As instructions I try to unzip the file as

# Tar zxvf slamr*.tar.gz

But got an error message
Says that ' Not in gzip format '.

Try gzip -dc slamr-2.6.27-7-generic.tar.gz | tar xf - instead.
