Antonio provides Good News below.
For several recent 2.6.2N  kernel releases, there has been a problem
doing multiple dialout sessions depending on the Smartlink slamr
driver.  This problem seems to have been corrected in the 2.6.29
kernel release.

guess I was wrong.  I do have to restart slmodemd service.  wvdial
failed to connect successive times.  It appeared to work :(
