Ok, here's the status. I started the "slmodemd" and used "wvdial" and it is
not connecting to my ISP.  I have included my wvdial.conf as well.  Since I
don't know how to configure modem to sound out what's going on and there are
not traces that I could find, I dont really know what's going on. Could
someone give some insight?

//typing the following command "wvdial" and "wvdialconf" at this point would
show the following. In order to fix the below condition, I need to restart
"slmodemd".

Sorry, no modem was detected!  Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?
