Have you checked dmesg? Maybe you use an i686 build on a i586 kernel
or vice versa? Or are you even on x86_64? For x86_64 the driver will
not work.

Only due to arch differences, e.g. i586 vs i686 vs i686-pae vs x86_64
vs ppc vs etc.
