Hi there Linmodem Discussion Group. I've just installed Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 on an Advent 7085 laptop. Of course, the infernal internal Winmodem didn't work. Windows XP listed it as follows: Agere AC'97 modem v2146D ven 8086 dev 266d subsys d5581019 rev 04/3 11583659 0 f3 Following the advice on the Ubuntu Community Support pages, I installed and ran scanModem. Half way down ModemData.txt I found the following: This is a NEW softmodem case! Please send the output ModemData.txt to DISCUSS@xxxxxxxxxxxxx to enrich the Archive and help others! If further assistance is not needed, please use email Subject: New Case Only hence this e-mail - ModemData.txt attached. Following the instructions in ModemData.txt I downloaded SLMODEMD.gcc4. 2.tar.gz. I attempted to execute slmodemd and recieved a message: progam slmodemd not instaled. Use sudo apt-get install sl-modem- daemon or something similar. So I did that, and it reported that dev/ttySL0 had been created. So I tried entering my account details into the Gnome Network Manager, but clicking on "connect ppp" didn't seem to do anything. By this time I was quite confused; there were a lot of different files to look through, and there seemed to be advice that I should compile something, but suddenly I noticed that the modem was using the 'phone line... I think it was Hardy's Gnome Network Manager that was trying to connect automatically. I removed all account details from it and installed kppp (which I'm used to) instead. I put account details into kppp and tried the "Query Modem" facility, which all seemed fine, except the country was USA and I wanted UK. I tried connecting, which seemed to work, but there wasn't much data transfer, and the modem seemed to stop trying after less than a minute, though the remote machine was still whistling at it. I don't remember which suggestion lead me to /etc/default/sl-modem-daemon but it somehow occurred to me that the country-code read USA, and I should try changing it to UK. I did this, (sudo gedit) and the modem has worked fine with kppp ever since. I'd read somewhere that I'd have to recompile if the Linux Kernel was changed; the old kernel from before the updates was available, so I tried rebooting and selecting the old kernel on the grub screen, but the modem still worked fine. I'm sorry that this has been a lengthy and confused message, but there is a lot of conflicting advice for a newbie such as myself. I shall unsubscribe from DISCUSS@xxxxxxxxxxxxx in about a week, to allow time for further communication if necessary; I still have the output from scanModem, though the laptop itself has been returned to its owner.
