You write pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-9.tar : this is NOT a compressed file (or
the name would have .gz after .tar (this is the most common suffix for
compressed files; .Z too mighr still exist, and others)
Which file did you dowload ( give the full URL http://...) ?
Which command did you give to install it?
